Before God of War 's protagonist Kratos crossed paths the gods of Norse Mythology, he made a name for himself by toppling the Greek Pantheon and destroying Olympus' most powerful rulers. However, Kratos did not kill all the gods, and there are close to a dozen Olympians that managed to survive Kratos' path of destruction.
Kratos is the former Greek God of War, while Atreus is half Giant, one-quarter god, and one-quarter mortal and is also referred to by his Giant name, Loki. Since the conclusion of the previous game, Kratos and Atreus have been in hiding at their home in Scandinavia in the realm of Midgard, training for the inevitable battle ahead of them. Daedalus's notes say about twelve years passed from when Zeus commissioned him to build the Labyrinth to when Daedalus is imprisoned within it. Since Zeus only discovers Pandora after Kratos kills Ares, and the feeble mortal Daedalus is still alive when Kratos arrives, Kratos was the God of War for twelve years, making him about 50. God of War is still a God of War game, but it isn’t like the others. Kratos is back, but he’s an older, more reserved expat, and the game (and gameplay) evolved along with him. From what can be gleaned from the God of War Ragnarök trailer, the sequel is wasting no time in picking up where the first left off, and will be finishing the Norse story of Kratos' narrative. Atreus may be older, but the nature of his identity is still a mystery and the battle against the Asgardians is still brewing.

In God of War II, one of the Bonus Costumes had the player look like Athena, although the voice was still that of Kratos. Athena was one of three Olympian Gods to appear in God of War (2018), the others being Zeus and Kratos himself (with the former only appearing as an illusion from the past).

There are still hierarchies of power within a pantheon, Kratos is way stronger than the average god since Zues is considered stronger than the average God. Also I'd like to point out that Nolan has battled ancient gods and won, so the gods in Invincible's universe are probably not as powerful as the ones in GoW.
